Editor's note:  Construction of modern contemporary surfboards, out of modern contemporary materials, can be a daunting task for those of us without experience at it. There is some money involved, and certainly time, and the use of chemicals which are or can be fairly toxic or flammable if directions aren't followed are all intimidating factors.

For those same reasons many skilled craftspeople are starting to charge outwardly largish sums for boards. Professional businesspeople have overhead to cover, perhaps employees, and the whole gamut of adult responsibilities. When you get into esoteric vehicles like a spoon kneeboard, there are only two people in the Continental U.S. who I am aware of who have the skills to make them commercially - and the price starts around $1200 if memory serves me. Not something which will encourage a person to "give it a try".

There are other avenues to explore, however, and people are actively poking around out there. Are they on "the cutting edge", or some edge which we aren't aware of? Perhaps. For many, a suburban Home Depot or equivilent provides affordable materials to investigate the past, present, and future.
