THE SUNBUMS GALLERY
A LOOK AT SOME VINTAGE ADS FROM 1971 AND 1973 FROM HAWAII'S VERSION OF THE FREE PRESS
It's a journey through the past, allright. And why not? In 2004 we are force fed a diet of calamity and fear, then lectured for not being active enough. U.S. television features relentless programming, reinforcing the notion that whatever you have is never good enough, including the way you look. The U.S. government seems intent on dragging the country back into the 1950's, complete with a "Cold War" against terrorism ("It's WWIII forever", said Hunter Thompson) and interior political policy being used as a tool of fear (trying to force hospitals to release medical records of patients who may have had late-term abortion procedures). An unpopular foreign military occupation is underway with an expected length of years, which has stirred the rumblings of selective service conscriptment, and many of the youth so poorly served by the public education systems of today think they can volunteer for "public service" to escape a military draft, apparently ignorant of the fact there is no such thing in any meaningful way.

All she wants to do is dance, said another sage rocker...well screw it. If nothing else it is important to have fun, question authority, and think for yourselves. What follows here are just a few happy views of another time, another place...
