| RETIREMENT! |
| It's been a long time coming, I guess, but a recent review of things has made me come to the conclusion that it is time for me to retire from surfing. Of course, this doesn't mean I'm actually going to stop... What it means is that after some 32 years of standing on a surfboard, plus another decade on top of that bodysurfing and mat riding, frying the skin off my body, putting extreme wear and tear on one knee and both shoulders and maybe both hips too, after spending a lot of money and uprooting my life time and time again, and then getting dismissed by newcomers and oldhangeroners because I somehow fail to pass their consumer branding muster, after having my committment continually questioned by people who are mostly committed to gathering money - I just don't feel like I need the grief. I have a hard time taking it seriously when the Holy Wise Men on top of the mountains turn out to be marketing directors of sportswear companies. So, I'm through taking it seriously all the time. I'm talking a major mental relief here, an orderly opening up of a new phase in my life. "Cut it loose or let it drag you down" is how Bruce Springsteen once phrased it. I'm changing skies. No doubt this will eventually influence what you see on this website. Retirement date is set for the full moon, Autumn Solstice: September 21, 2002. As you can see, I'm jumping with joy.
