WHAT IS KILLING BODYBOARDING

To the left you see 30 years of production bodyboard design evolution. No question the materials and manufacturing methods have improved, but design? It's partly a tribute to Tom Morey and his initial vision. The other part might best be described another way.
Some very knowledgable people say that most contemporary bodyboards for sale today ride faster when ridden upside down and backwards. They seem to find some humor in this. They also don't
bodyboard much anymore.
The surf mat: pool toy for kids? I think not. These are handcrafted, with eclectic materials and wave-conforming flex. The white mat currently resides in Australia with owner Robert Patch at Burleigh Heads; the dark bronze mat with Kenny Hughes in exclusive California confines. As high-end bodyboard prices push the $300 mark, and stiffer cores reduce flex and perhaps durability in extreme conditions, it may be time to give mats a more thorough examination. Or, if you grew up after bodyboards, a first look.
I have an old SURFTOONS magazine somewhere with a funny article about "The Future Of Surfing".  In it there is a fanciful drawing of something which looks very much like this triplane hull bodyboard. The SURFTOONS was published in 1968; this board made in the early 1980's. So what earthshaking invention will be in the 2002  BODYBOARDING Gear Guide?

Another Dale Solomonson creation.
