KNEEBOARD SIGHTING
A rare treat thanks to Hurricanes Elida and Douglas was the North Malibu opportunity to see some kneeboarders in action. I saw one down at Zuma during the run of Douglas, and tis fellow at Leo Carrillo. One reason for the fade in popularity of kneeboarding was the difficulty in taking good action photos. It sometimes seemed like once Warren Bolster moved to Hawaii, kneeboarding collapsed through the lack of his California photos.
I was shooting the inside section as the sun fought to stay out. People were moving around behind me, but with steady incoming sets I didn't pay any attention to them. During a lull I turned around and saw this evocative scene: a "cave" in the bushes, fins, wetsuit, fish-style kneeboard, and a bottle of drinking water. If you weren't around for the 70's, you probably can't imagine how many people actually lived this way, sometimes for years on end.
Look for an update - there is another photo which didn't make it through the scanner.
