It's about life - not "lifestyle"
HAPPY NEW YEAR
FROM VAGABONDSURF.COM
Surfing is what brought me here this particular morning, and surfing is what has brought so many of us together in this particular corner of cyberspace. It's way beyond a Circle Game. The end of one journey is most often the beginning of another, regardless if we can see it for what it is at the time. Have you come to the point where you realize you don't need waves to surf any more? That surfing can be the discipline that teaches how to live a good life?

Some days I despair that surfing has become a stadium of followers who think by virtue of their being able to stand on a surfboard that they are each an individual little Christ walking on water. In such moments the passing parade is sad to the point of levity. I recall an old surf magazine report of shaping room graffiti that read something like this: "Only dead fish swim with the stream". A friend once countered with the notion that live fish, however, don't try to change the course of the stream. Both are good points. I'm not a fish, and neither are you.

If on some days standing on a surfboard seems blasphemous, the countermeasure for that is to do it another way. Having been through the rinse cycles a few times I can say I've taken great joy by returning to bodysurfing, bodyboarding when conditions called for it, and most recently riding a mat. Should I admit that I haven't stood on a board for over three months? That during those three months I've made more dawn patrols than during the previous fifteen years? That my enjoyment level has jumped almost in direct proportion to my not having to think about what board to take? Where does it go from here?

2003 is here, and so are we. Thank you for your continued support, feedback, and contributions. Stay with us, and we'll stay with you.
