THE HAND SURFA
one of the early commercial handboards

These are two auction site photo grabs of the Hand Surfa, which to the best of my knowledge was the first commercially available handboard for bodysurfing available in at least Southern California. This was in the mid-to-late 1960's. They were made of molded plastic and were amazingly durable - I have one just like this but perhaps in better condition from less use.

An Australian design, they are still manufactured Down Under, although not commercially available in the United States.
