GAME REVIEW |
The Thursday, January 24, 2002 edition of the Los Angeles Times ran a review of some actions sports video games, and at the bottom of page T3 they ran a very interesting interview with the creators of the game Transworld Surf. It examines how the programmers created what the reviewer was calling one of the most realistic water games ever, and certainly their glowing review makes this sound like the best surfing game. The game designers had to break the act down into elements, and this is where the reading got really interesting to me. "There are four major things about water that the human eye will pick up. One is the physics of the movement of the water, or how it animates. Another is the reflections off the water's surface, the refraction, and what I would call subsurface scattering of light, or the diffusion of light. Those are the three visual components. Then there's the fourth - the physics of the water itself." -Steve Rotenberg Director of Research Angel Studios I don't know if somebody wrote about this stuff in a book or if Mr. Rotenberg came up with that on his own, but it is a brilliant observation. It makes a good scope to view wave photos with. Complete text of the article is available through the Transworld Surf Magazine website. |
