It might be worthwhile to take a look at this 1970-vintage man-made wave. Think about the surf you get to ride day after day. These days, when the crowd often determines where and when you surf, wouldn't a "sure-thing" option like this be nice to have? Or would you rather sit in polluted water with 30 other people and hassle for the same thing?
Artificial reefs are still a thing of the future. Serious studies will have to be made to determine collateral damage to the coastal environment. Yet an artificial wave in a contained environment could be built nearly anywhere there is a population to support it, giving everybody options which for all intents and purposes don't exist at this point in 2001. And this could happen within a couple of years... |
